John Cottrell

About
John Cottrell has lived and painted in Byron Bay for the past 17 years.
John started his career as a screenprinter. Later he moved onto painting with gouache on paper, quirky little journey paintings, telling stories using animals as symbols and ship-shapes as vehicles...many of these paintings where based in Byron Bay and incorporated the landscape .
The more current work has been a conscious moving away from story telling but has an all encompasing concept based on science and philosophy.
The surface has a burnished quality and a simplicity that through color draws the viewer into the painting.
John's paintings have ended up in many countries throughout the world, from Iceland to Brazil to Japan.
He has had regular sell out shows in Sydney and has shown in regional galleries in the area.

ARTIST STATEMENT:

Having trained as a printmaker, my paintings involve some of the processes, techniques and graphic qualities that I learnt in that discipline. This has enabled me to produce the luminous textured and transparent qualities in my paintings.

My current work has an organic quality that suggests a process of growth or change - signs of life. It has its origin in nature and science referencing the amplified observations of microscopic imagery. These circular forms keep coming back into my work, each time slightly different, they relate to universal processes from cell division to astronomy.

My work has developed from narrative based paintings in the 1990's to paintings that capture the vibrational energy of nature through sound recordings. With the use of open layered and transparent colours, the work reflects these harmonic tones of nature.
